A Novel Two Phase Hybrid Switched Reluctance Motor/Field-Assisted Generator: Concept, Simulation, and Experimental Confirmation
Authors
Abstract:
The switched reluctance motor is a simple and robust machine, which has found application over a wide power and speed ranges in different shapes and geometries. This paper introduces a new configuration for a two phase unidirectional switched reluctance motor/field assisted generator. The proposed novel motor/generator consists of two magnetically independent stator and rotor sets (layers), where each stator set includes four salient poles with windings wrapped around them, while the rotor comprises of two salient poles with different arc lengths and no windings. There is a stationary reel, which has the field coils wrapped around it and is placed between the two-stator sets. In the motor mode of operation the two sets are connected independently. In this connection the stator poles in each layer can have both North and South Pole configurations. In the generator mode, the stator poles in one set can have either north or South Pole configuration while the stator poles in the other set (layer) have the opposite pole arrangements. In this format, the developed magnetic field from the stator poles travels to the rotor then to the rotor shaft and finally completes its path via the motor/generator housing. To evaluate the motor performance, two types of analysis, namely, the numerical technique and the experimental study have been utilized. In the numerical analysis, the finite element analysis is employed, where as in the experimental study, a proto-type motor has been built and tested.

full textStudy on switched reluctance generator.
The linear and non-linear math models of the switched reluctance generator (SRG) in generator mode were established in this work. The phase current and energy conversion process during generator operation were simulated by the linear math model. The non-linear math model was used to analyze the characteristics of the SRG operation in self-excitation mode and in separately-excitation mode. Some ...
full textA Novel Linear Switched Reluctance Machine: Analysis and Experimental Verification
The important problems to be solved in Linear Switched Reluctance Machines (LSRMs) are: (1) to design the shape and size of poles in stator and translator cores; (2) to optimize their geometrical configuration. A novel stator geometry for LSRMs that improved the force profile was presented in this study. In the new geometry, pole shoes were affixed on the stator poles. Static and dynamic charac...

This paper presents a flywheel energy storage system, which uses a switched reluctance motor/generator. It is shown how this device can be used either together with a DVR or alone in order to attenuate the effects of voltage sags and short interruptions. In order to improve the system efficiency, some design alternatives are presented. Finite elements analyses results, validated against laborat...
full textSwitched Reluctance Generator for Wind Power Applications
Green house effect has becomes a serious concern in many countries due to the increase consumption of the fossil fuel. There have been many studies to find an alternative power source. Wind energy found to be one of the most useful solutions to help in overcoming the air pollution and global. There is no agreed solution to conversion of wind energy to electrical energy. In this paper, the advan...
full textRegenerative Braking Using Switched Reluctance Generator
This paper proposes an effective method of energy regeneration during braking for a dc motor or internal combustion(IC) engine. During the braking period, instead of dissipating the kinetic energy in the brake shoes and poles in the form of heat, this energy is recovered using a switched reluctance generator that is mechanically coupled to the shaft of prime mover. Here the DC motor or the IC e...
